Due to next week's holiday, at our school we organised the carnival closure a week early. This day is the last day of carnival, which marks the end of the festivities, with a break until Easter.
The carnival tradition dates back centuries. Its most prominent symbol is a straw puppet called Elijah, who is dressed in shirt, trousers and waistcoat, with boots on his feet, a hat on his head and who, is mourned with a terrible wailing sound by the funeral procession. After mourning, they take him out of his trousers and set fire to the pile of straw, symbolically chasing away winter.
It was no different at our school. With the help of teacher Stan Iulia-Georgeta, a group of pupils performed a funny carnival dance in the courtyard, parading Elijah and his entourage. Among them were a bride and groom, a priest, a gypsy woman, a gypsy, a master of ceremonies, a doctor who, despite his many attempts, failed to revive Elijah and, of course, the weeping women. At the end of the carnival, the enthusiastic audience, including school pupils and teachers, were treated to bread with lard and hot tea. Thanks to teacher Geta for the fun, who organised the show, to the students who participated and to class X.B who prepared the food.
